According to the American Diabetes Association, yearly overall healthcare costs for a patient with diabetes were $11,744 in 2007, of which 57 percent -- $6,649 -- was directly attributed to diabetes. Moreover, one in five healthcare dollars on a patient with diabetes, and one in ten healthcare dollars is attributed to diabetes. To counteract this spending, several healthcare organizations are having success with diabetes medical homes, which can pay off in more cost-effective, patient-centric care.
